And when we say "conscious", we mean being aware of why certain formulas must be leveraged and why specific methods work better than others at getting the right answers quickly.


2. Insufficient Practice


Often find yourself asking, “How do I stop making careless mistakes in Math?” Practice makes perfect! And this is especially true for O-Level Math exams.

Here are a few common errors that we've noticed made by students for some key topics and sub-topics in the Math syllabus:


1. Errors in Expression Manipulation and Equations


The dreaded topic of Numbers and Algebra  — as much as it might have thrown students off the first time they learned Algebra, we're sure that some come to eventually love it. But here’s the catch:


And when it comes to algebraic expressions and formulas, many students know that manipulating expressions and equations demands precision. This is because the slightest missteps can lead to incorrect solutions. This is especially so in the intricate world of bracket expansion, a shared blunder among students.


Many encounter the pitfall of partially multiplying brackets, yielding results such as 12x–6 from 3(4x–6). Additionally, many face the challenge of overlooking the sign change when multiplying out brackets, especially concerning the second term within the brackets. For instance, the misstep of multiplying the second term of –5(x–y) resulted in –5y, omitting the crucial sign alteration.


Therefore, remember to pay close attention to signs, coefficients, and Mathematical operations.


2. Confusion Between Mean, Median, and Mode


The next common mistake lies in the topic of Statistics and Probability. Though at first glance, this topic might be considered to be one of the simplest, many tend to confuse the concept of Mean, Median, and Mode. However, mixing up these concepts can lead to inaccurate interpretations and conclusions.


For example, a shared hurdle among many is determining the median of data sets featuring an even count of values. It is an extremely common trend for students to falter, often submitting one of the two central values as their response. Instead, the right way is to compute the precise average of the two middle numbers, as required for accurate median calculation.


3. Order of Operations Oversight


Calculations must adhere to the order of operations, commonly remembered by the acronym BODMAS (Brackets, Orders, Division, Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction). While this sequence is drilled amongst Math students from as early as Primary Four and Five, many tend to ignore this sequence. The result? Getting incorrect answers, even when the Mathematical concepts are sound.


4. Incorrect Application of Distance-Speed-Time Formulas


Then, we have the topic of Rate and Speed. Among many tackling their O-Level Math paper, inquiries pertaining to Speed posed a formidable challenge. Notably, while many possess familiarity with the speed formula and meticulously record a distance-speed-time triangle, they tend to stumble by applying an erroneous operation (such as Multiplication instead of Division) to reach their solution. At the same time, there are a few that are simply unfamiliar with the formula itself, leaving them unable to tackle the posed question.


While writing down the distance-speed-time triangle is a step in the right direction, using the wrong operation to solve the problem at hand can result in errors. As such, make sure to use the appropriate Mathematical operation when solving these types of problems.


5. Rounding Errors


And finally, the sub-topic of Approximation and Estimation. Rounding off numbers is a crucial skill, but it's easy to miscalculate and arrive at incorrect answers. A prevalent misstep revolves around neglecting to furnish calculator-generated answers with the necessary decimal precision or significant figures. Additionally, many students often grapple with incorrect rounding strategies or prematurely applying rounding measures within their calculations.
